چکیده

We explore the consequences of an earlier phase-out of Ozone Depleting Substances, starting ten years before the Montreal Protocol. Atmospheric chemistry simulations verify the effectiveness of such an early-action scenario: stratospheric chlorine abundance remains below the level at which the ozone hole was discovered, even though countries are permanently allowed to continue using ODS to a non-negligible extent. A sectorally detailed technico-economic analysis finds that the additional cost of the earlier action scenario would have been moderate. We conclude that the Montreal Protocol was only partially successful at precaution: global atmospheric environmental problems could be regulated before surprising non-linearities occur.

Mechanisms and feedback causing changes in upper stratospheric ozone in the 21st century

[1] Stratospheric ozone is expected to increase during the 21st century as the abundance of halogenated ozone‐depleting substances decrease to 1960 values. However, climate change will likely alter this “recovery” of stratospheric ozone by changing stratospheric temperatures, circulation, and abundance of reactive chemical species. Here we quantify the contribution of different mechanisms to ch...

Perchloroethylene White Paper - Novermber 2008

Perchloroethylene, also known as tetrachloroethylene or perc, has been used safely in industry for over 50 years. It is an effective, nonfl ammable solvent that does not contribute to the formation of smog (ground-level ozone) or to the depletion of stratospheric ozone. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of perchloroethylene as a replacement for stratospheric ozon...

The potential to narrow uncertainty in projections of stratospheric ozone over the 21st century

Future stratospheric ozone concentrations will be determined both by changes in the concentration of ozone depleting substances (ODSs) and by changes in stratospheric and tropospheric climate, including those caused by changes in anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs). Since future economic development pathways and resultant emissions of GHGs are uncertain, anthropogenic climate change could be ...

Comment on “ Tropospheric temperature response to stratospheric ozone recovery in the 21 st century ” by Hu et al . ( 2011 )

Stratospheric ozone recovery is expected to figure prominently in twenty-first century climate change. In a recent paper, Hu et al. (2011) argue that one impact of ozone recovery will be to enhance the warming of the surface-troposphere system produced by increases in wellmixed greenhouse gases. Furthermore, this enhanced warming would be strongest in the Northern Hemisphere, which is surprisin...
